US Coast Guard responding to leaking well in Gulf of Mexico

(REUTERS) - The United States (US) Coast Guard on Tuesday said it was responding to a leak from a natural gas and crude oil platform owned by Energy Resources Technology (ERT) Gulf of Mexico LLC.

Work to temporarily plug Well B2 in Ship Shoal Block 225 Platform B, in shallow water about 119km south-west of Port Fourchon, Louisiana, was ongoing. Two other wells on Platform B that were producing at the time were subsequently shut-in, the Coast Guard said.

All platform personnel were safely evacuated, the Coast Guard said.

According to ERT's site assessment, natural gas is flowing from the well and there is a rainbow sheen visible on the surface estimated to be more than 6km wide by 1.2km long, the Coast Guard said.

Privately held exploration and production company Talos Energy LLC in Houston in February acquired ERT for US$620 million (S$794 million) from Helix Energy Solutions Group Inc. Talos executives did not immediately respond to requests for comment or detail about the incident.
