Where it happened

Trump, 78, was speaking at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania – about 50km north of Pittsburgh – on the evening of July 13.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) later identified the gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. He was from Pennsylvania's Bethel Park, a town about 70km, or an hour's drive, from the Trump rally site. His motive was not immediately clear.

How it unfolded

Trump began speaking just after 6pm local time. Six minutes into his speech – when Trump was speaking about the rise in border crossings under President Joe Biden’s watch – several gunshots were heard.

The crowd yelled “duck” as the shots rang out.

Trump grabbed his right ear with his right hand, then brought his hand down to look at it before dropping to his knees behind the podium. Secret Service agents swarmed and covered him for several seconds before he was rushed off stage with blood near his ear and on the side of his face.

Trump emerged about a minute later and pumped his fist in the air appearing to mouth the words “Fight! Fight! Fight!”. Agents then escorted him down the stage to a black sport utility vehicle.

The suspect reportedly fired from an elevated shed nearby with an AR-style rifle, law enforcement officers told CBS network. The location of the shooter was to Trump’s right.

Trump later said: “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.” he posted on his Truth Social account. “Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening.”
