WASHINGTON (AFP) - Cory Gardner defeated Colorado Democratic Senator Mark Udall, putting the Republican party on the brink of capturing a majority in the 100-member chamber.

The flip in Colorado was the fifth of six needed to tilt the balance in the Senate. Several other races were still being tallied in the midterm elections.
