Trump upset that Merkel chosen as Time Magazine's Person of the Year

UNITED STATES (REUTERS) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he is upset because German Chancellor Angela Merkel was selected as Time Magazine's Person of the Year and he wasn't.

"Obviously, I should have been picked The Person of the Year," Mr Trump told a crowd of supporters in New Hampshire on Monday (Jan 11).

He suggested that, in view of the sexual assaults in Cologne on New Year's Eve, Dr Merkel was a poor choice for the magazine cover. The German police said the assaults were carried out by several hundred young men, whom they described as having a “North African or Arabic” appearance.

Mr Trump said: "I don't know what happened to her. She was doing well. Maybe she got power hungry. Maybe she thought she was invincible. They're taking people... The crime is astronomical. It's not working. They're having riots now in the street and the German people are now saying 'We've had it; we've had it.' We can't let that happen to us."

At one point, a heckler interrupted Mr Trump's remarks, saying they were "boring" and that he ought to tell a few jokes instead.

"Out! Out! Out! Out! Get out of here," Mr Trump commanded to his security personnel and the man was eventually removed.
