Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen's resignation on a late Sunday afternoon triggered a frenzy of speculation, with Democrats applauding her exit while some pundits warned that her replacement could be someone more hard line on immigration.

"Kirstjen Nielsen oversaw the implementation of the Trump Admin's increasingly toxic anti-immigrant policies," Democratic Party leader and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi tweeted. "That she is reportedly resigning because she is not extreme enough for the White House's liking is deeply alarming."
