The ultimatum from Washington worked.

One by one, eight American universities from the west coast of Oregon to Minnesota in the Midwest to the island of Hawaii closed their Confucius Institutes over the past year under pressure from the Pentagon, which stopped funding its own Chinese language programmes at universities that also had the China-funded centres.
