WASHINGTON - A video shared by the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington of its giant panda, Tian Tian, enjoying the snowy weather in the US has quickly gone viral.

"Tian Tian woke up this morning to a lot of snow, and he was pretty excited about it," the zoo said on Twitter.

The video was also posted on the Smithsonian's Facebook page on Saturday about 7.10am on Saturday morning and an hour later had already been viewed more than 1.2 million times and shared by more than 115,000 users.

A massive storm was hitting a large swath of the eastern US on Saturday, leaving cities from Washington to New York covered in snow and spurring blizzard warnings in many parts of the Mid-Atlantic and North-east.

Up to 85 million people were in the path of the major winter storm.

The Smithsonian is home to four giant pandas and runs one of the world's leading panda conservation programmes.
