Votes are being counted and winners projected as polling booths close across nine time zones. Nearly 100 million early votes, more than two-thirds of the total number of votes cast in the 2016 election that brought President Donald Trump to power, may determine the winner.
It is safe to say that the turnout, that has ranged between 50 per cent and 57 per cent in elections since 2000, will be one for the record books.
