With his usual showmanship, United States President Donald Trump has gone from real estate tycoon and reality TV star to the brink of negotiating with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with whom he has traded barbs over Pyongyang's nuclear threat.

He made the shocking decision last week to meet Mr Kim in a move that abruptly reversed decades of US policy aimed at preventing North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
