LONDON - As leader of Europe's biggest and richest nation, German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Washington on Friday (April 27) should have attracted maximum attention. But it doesn't, for Dr Merkel's United States tour has been largely overshadowed by the just-concluded state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron.

It is not Merkel, but Macron who now appears to be speaking for Europe.
