A raging brush fire in California overran the Interstate 15 freeway in mountainous Cajon Pass in California on Friday, burning 20 vehicles and forcing people to scramble to safety. Hundreds of firefighters battled yesterday to contain the fire which torched several homes and forced thousands of residents in a nearby community to be evacuated. Rain provided some respite and the freeway, which links Southern California and Las Vegas, was reopened. The blaze had charred 1,400ha of land but there were no reports of injuries or casualties.
