WASHINGTON/SEOUL/BEIJING/TOKYO - When Russia invaded Ukraine, Moscow sought to justify its aggression by pointing to the eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) onto its doorstep as forcing its hand.

China, which has long been vocal about its discomfort with US alliances and security cooperation in its neighbourhood, was quick to pick up on the argument.
