Strong magnitude-6.5 quake hits north of Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck off the coast of Puerto Rico on early Monday, but United States seismologists said there was no threat of a widespread tsunami.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 12:01am. The epicentre was located about 55km north of the US territory in the Caribbean, and about 96.6km from San Juan.

The quake struck at a depth of about 29km. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
