A visitor gazing at portraits and statues of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong at a souvenir store in Shaoshan in the hilly region of central Hunan province. Shaoshan was Mao's home town, and thousands visit it every day to pay homage to the "Great Helmsman". It is one of the core sites of the "red tourism" industry, in which Communist Party cadres and ordinary tourists seek to relive the experiences and rekindle the spirit of the Chinese revolutionaries.
