(REUTERS) - A new Guinness World Record was set for the largest number of pizzas tossed on Wednesday (Oct 28) at an event in Shanghai.

A total of 511 pizzas were up in the air, which broke the old record of 388 set in London last summer.

Participants were required to stretch and toss the pizza dough in a traditional way and kept doing that for a minimum of one minute, maintaining the size of pizza dough as long as 30.5cm.

The Guinness World Record certification officer Cheng Dong announced the record attempt was successfully approved.

The event, organised by the Pudong Shangri-La hotel, featured many participants that were breast cancer patients.

"It's very exciting. We try to do something different every year and we said this year it would be pizza toss," explained the hotel's general manager Peter Clarke. "We said the goal would be 450 or 480. We ended up with 511 people, all doing the same thing, having fun in the room and raising money and awareness for breast cancer. So I think all in all, a very successful event," he said.

All the pizzas were sold out on the street afterwards, and the money from pizza sales was donated to More Than Aware, a charity that helps raise awareness about breast cancer.
