LONDON (AFP) - Cheering crowds congratulated Britain's Prince Charles on Tuesday on the birth of his first grandson, although the heir to the throne and his wife Camilla refrained from dropping any hints about the baby's name.

"Morning, grandad," said one resident of Bugthorpe in Yorkshire, northern England, raising a chuckle from the 64-year-old Prince of Wales as he toured the village green with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

As villager after villager offered their congratulations a day after William and Kate's new arrival - another future king - Charles said: "I'm thrilled and very excited."

Camilla is already a grandmother but the newborn is her husband's first grandchild, and she said he would be "brilliant" with the baby.

"I think it's wonderful news. I think mother, son and father are all doing well," she told the BBC.

"And I think it's a wonderfully uplifting moment for the country. It's very exciting and I think it's wonderful for the grandfather - he's brilliant with children. So he'll have a wonderful time."

Local resident Debbie Lister who came to meet the royal couple with her eight-year-old daughter Isla, asked Camilla about the baby's name, which has yet to be announced.

"She said they had no clue whatsoever. She wasn't giving anything away," Ms Lister said.

William and Kate, both 31, spent the night with their new baby in St Mary's Hospital in London, where the baby was born on Monday afternoon weighing eight pounds six ounces (3.8kg).
