The air strikes on Syrian military and research installations by the United States, Britain and France late on Friday were roughly double the size of the US' strike on a single Syrian airbase in August last year.
Defence Secretary James Mattis told journalists at a Pentagon briefing: "We were very precise and proportionate but, at the same time, it was a heavy strike."
