SINGAPORE - Leaders of Singapore on Thursday (June 28) congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his victory in the presidential and parliamentary elections over the weekend.

In a letter released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore President Halimah Yacob underscored the "warm and growing ties" between the two countries and invited Mr Erdogan to make a state visit to Singapore.

"Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries," Madam Halimah wrote, calling it a joyous occasion for both countries to commemorate and celebrate.

"I wish Your Excellency continued good health and success, and look forward to working closely with you to deepen the ties between Singapore and Turkey," she added.

In his letter, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the two countries share a strategic partnership underpinned by strong political and economic ties, and enjoy close cooperation in the aviation, maritime, science and technology, and education sectors.

"The entry into force of the Turkey-Singapore Free Trade Agreement in 2017 will further strengthen our cooperation," said Mr Lee.

"I look forward to continuing to work with you and your government to enhance our bilateral partnership."

Mr Erdogan won 53 per cent of the vote in Sunday's (June 24) presidential election, extending his rule until at least 2023.
