In Good Company: Mark Thompson's digital leap pays off for NYT

Chief exec set storied New York title on new path, growing its digital subscriptions and revenue

In these troubled times for newspapers, when "death of print" has become a veritable cliche, it is refreshing to sit down with a media company boss who is not some passionless accountant looking to make the next cuts but actually enthusiastic about investing in the news business, rather like the publishers of this paper.

Mr Mark Thompson, chief executive officer of The New York Times Company, is one of those who has proven that optimism can be infectious. In a remarkable turnaround of its flagship product NYT's fortunes, he has shaken it free of its print orientation and focused it firmly on a digital journey.
