A by-election in Negeri Sembilan next month could add fresh turmoil to Malaysian politics as the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance and the opposition coalition led by Umno both need to win the seat.

A PH win in the April 13 vote would be a heavy blow for Umno, which is fielding its acting president Mohamad Hasan. The political career of Datuk Seri Mohamad would come to an abrupt end should he fail to defend his hometown seat after three terms, sending Umno into a tailspin as well.
