Germany summons US envoy over Merkel phone spying claims

BERLIN (AFP) - Germany on Thursday summoned the United States ambassador to Berlin over suspicion Washington spied on Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle will personally meet US envoy John B. Emerson later Thursday, the spokesman told AFP, in a highly unusual step between the decades-long allies.
