MIAMI • Ms Mariela Jewett is 68 today, but the day in Cuba around 60 years ago that the soldiers came to her father's coffee plantation is seared into her memory.

The family was returning home when they saw the troops at their house. Your farm belongs to the revolution now, they told her father. Soon after, she and her mother left for Florida. Her father followed later.
