7 Ukraine soldiers killed in clash with separatists

KIEV • Ukraine said yesterday seven of its soldiers had been killed and 14 wounded in the bloodiest clashes with pro-Russian separatists in two months. The news of the highest daily death toll since Ukraine reported seven of its soldiers dying on May 24 follows a flurry of talks between world leaders and Moscow on stopping the 26-month conflict.

Military spokesman Andriy Lysenko told reporters the fighting had become very, very heated in the past few days.

US can join EU case on cross-border data feeds

DUBLIN • The United States can join a landmark case on the legality of cross-border data transfers, an Irish court ruled yesterday, giving US authorities a platform to defend their surveillance laws before the European Union's top court.

Austrian privacy activist Max Schrems filed a case against Facebook, which has its European headquarters in Dublin, over data transfers from the EU to the US, to determine whether personal privacy is protected from US government surveillance.
