Delegates from Germany's ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) are gathering in the northern German city of Hamburg today to elect a new party leader.
Their deliberations have attracted little international attention. These are, after all, internal party manoeuvres which, under normal circumstances, are of interest only to those deeply committed to Germany's domestic political scene.
