At the end of a trip to Beijing in early April, French President Emmanuel Macron told journalists that the European Union

should not be a “follower” of the United States’ policy on China,

particularly on Taiwan. The island, he said, is “not our crisis”.

His statement outraged many European politicians, who said that Europe cannot expect to keep getting US protection but offer no support to Washington in the Asia-Pacific region.
