LONDON - European governments are still scrambling to provide a diplomatic pathway out of the showdown between Russia and the West over the status of Ukraine.

"Direct talks with Kyiv and Moscow are very important," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, as he embarked on negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday (Feb 15).
