A Scottish soldier attending a ceremony in northern France yesterday to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, fought between the Allied soldiers and the Germans. It was one of the deadliest battles of World War I, with the British army suffering almost 60,000 casualties on the first day alone. The battle lasted five months, killing 1.2 million people. Britain observed two minutes of silence to honour those who died.
