In a move that appears to restore old traditions of the Soviet Union, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently ordered the creation of a new organisation within his country's military, designed to promote "patriotism" among soldiers.

The order, which affects around one million Russian men and women in uniform, is clear evidence that Russia is girding itself for a long confrontation with the West. And it is accompanied by continued heavy investment in Russia's armed forces.
