Politicians in Spain have traded barbs and personal insults at the start of what will be an unusually long and hard campaign for the national election, scheduled for April 28.

Anxious leaders throughout Europe fear that not only would the ballot fail to break Spain's current political logjam, it may also provide a boost to far-right populist movements now rising to prominence in many other parts of the continent.
