Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her Christian Democratic Union's election win on Sunday.

"My congratulations on your party's success at the 2017 Federal Elections! The German electorate's endorsement is a vote of confidence in your strong leadership," PM Lee said in a letter to Dr Merkel, who secured a fourth consecutive term in office.

In the letter, released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, PM Lee said: "On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I wish you every success as you embark on a new term as Federal Chancellor... Singapore looks forward to stepping up collaboration with Germany in new frontiers such as connectivity, mobility, cyber security, start-ups and renewable energy." He also reiterated his invitation to Dr Merkel to make an official visit to Singapore.
