German Chancellor Angela Merkel appears to have won a showdown with opponents within her government over the country's immigration policies.

Although the fate of her interior minister - who threatened to resign when his demands for harsher border controls were rejected - continues to hang in the balance, it is clear that Chancellor Merkel's coalition government is not facing collapse. If anything, she may have emerged strengthened from the latest dispute.
