Macron connects with Trump, but influence unlikely

French leader's diplomatic triumphs will probably not have much impact on US policy

As leader of Europe's biggest and richest nation, German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Washington today should have attracted maximum attention. But it doesn't, for Dr Merkel's United States tour has been largely overshadowed by the just-concluded state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron.

It is not Dr Merkel, but Mr Macron who now appears to be speaking for Europe.
