LONDON - Prince William and his wife Kate have formally registered the birth of their newborn daughter, Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

Kensington Palace announced the registration in a tweet on Tuesday.

A picture of the birth certificate, signed by Prince William, was posted along with the announcement.

The Palace also tweeted that the prince signed the birth register at Kensington Palace and that it was witnessed by a register from Westminster Register Office.

Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana was born on Saturday, May 2. Her name is a triple homage to her grandfather Prince Charles, great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William's late mother Diana.

According to the Office for National Statistics, Charlotte was the 21st most popular name for girls in England and Wales in 2013.
