Photographs of two young men dancing with a dead dolphin during a party at an accommodation complex near the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) in Ireland has drawn widespread condemnation online.
The photos, which were uploaded on the mobile app Snapchat last week, showed one of the men holding the carcass over his shoulder in the kitchen area of an apartment while the other photographed the act.
They then threw the dolphin out of the window. The animal was found the following morning lying on the grass, and was subsequently wrapped and disposed of.
According to news website Irish Independent, the two men - who are not students at CIT - had travelled with the dolphin's carcass from west Cork to the party near the university's campus last Wednesday (May 24) night.
It was unclear how they came to be in possession of the carcass.
CIT Students' Union President Shane Falvey said he was not aware of the incident, although he confirmed that the student accommodation complex was not officially part of CIT and is completely independent.
The Cork Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals slammed the actions of the men, calling them "idiots".
"The mind boggles with people's stupidity," said a society spokesperson. "Anybody with any level of cop-on would know it's not right."
