Political implications of Notre-Dame disaster go beyond reconstruction of the landmark

French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to rebuild the mediaeval cathedral of Notre-Dame after a major fire partially destroyed the landmark which has stood as a symbol of France for almost a millennium.

"We will rebuild this cathedral all together. Because that is what our history deserves. Because that is our profound destiny," a visibly shaken Mr Macron said while visiting the site of the disaster, a Unesco World Heritage site.
