European leaders are scrambling to salvage the nuclear deal with Iran, even though that puts them on a collision course with the US.

"The deal with Iran is the culmination of 12 years of diplomacy," the European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in response to the United States decision to pull out of the Iran agreement.
