The resignation of Mr James Mattis as US defence secretary will probably go down as a watershed moment in the history of the transatlantic alliance.

Mr Mattis was the last principled advocate of a strong US-European bond. With him gone, President Donald Trump is free to pursue whatever policy he wants with regard to Europe and other partners.
