Leaders at emergency summit aware their decisions have long-term impact on bloc

European Union heads of states and governments are gathering in Brussels today for an emergency summit to discuss Britain's request for a further postponement of its intended separation from the EU.

None of the options are appealing; the saga of Brexit overshadows many other pressing matters.
