In March last year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's verbal attacks took on a more personal tone. "Shame on you," he railed against German Chancellor Angela Merkel, impolitely addressing her only by her last name, without mentioning her title. "You are supporting terrorists," he ranted.
He was accusing Berlin of sheltering Kurdish and other Turkish far-left militants, as well as military officers and others linked to an abortive coup against him in 2016.
