Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to focus on driving a "strong programme" of economic growth after his party suffered a serious setback in the country's local elections.

Mr Erdogan tried to make light of the results by claiming that his ruling Justice and Development Party - or AKP as it is known by its Turkish acronym - still controls just over half of Turkey's local authority posts.
