LONDON - Social media has been left stunned over a British general election exit poll released on Thursday (June 8), which predicted that Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party will lose its overall majority.

The poll figures have the ruling Conservatives with 314 seats, leaving them 12 short of the 326 needed for a majority in Parliament.

The hashtags #exitpoll and #hungparliament were trending on Twitter, with netizens expressing shock and bemusement at the prospect of Mrs May's decision to call a snap election backfiring spectacularly.
