Firefighters and police join forces to help 15m-long whale stranded in Vieux Port area of the city.

MARSEILLE, FRANCE (REUTERS) - A whale was stuck in the waters of Marseille's Vieux-Port area on Wednesday (Oct 18), prompting intervention from police and firefighters.

The rescuers waded into the Quai Marcel Pagnol to help the 15-metre whale turn back towards the sea.

It was stuck for about an hour, drawing onlookers as it floated in the shallow cove.

The Mediterranean Sea is home to several species of cetaceans, including sperm and pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins.
