Three years into Mr Rodrigo Duterte's presidency, the Philippines is still internally divided on how to manage its relations with China.

The controversial President has expressed his preference for warmer ties with the Asian powerhouse, but many in the defence establishment and broader civil society remain sceptical of a rapprochement with Beijing.
