Bishop arrested for drunken driving in US

WORCESTER, Massachusetts (AP) - The leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts, in the United States has been arrested on drunken driving charges.

Police say Bishop Robert McManus was arrested on Saturday night after a hit-and-run accident in the nearby state of Rhode Island.

Police say the driver of the vehicle that was hit followed Bishop McManus and called police. Police say Bishop McManus was arrested at his nearby vacation house.

In a statement, the 61-year-old McManus said he drove after drinking wine at dinner. He said he has no excuse for his mistake and is ready to accept its consequences and make amends.

Bishop McManus has led led the Worcester diocese since 2004.

He's scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday in District Court in Wakefield, Rhode Island.
