Volcano spews toxic gas, over 1,200 evacuated

KUPANG (Indonesia) • Morethan 1,200 people have been evacuated from their homes as a gurgling volcano in eastern Indonesia spews clouds of ash and toxic gas into the air.

Officials said yesterday that they had distributed thousands of gas masks to villagers around Mount Egon in eastern Flores island as choking fumes from the volcano intensified.

The volcano began rumbling last month but has become more active in recent days, sending villagers fleeing from their homes.

World's oldest man dies at age 112

TOKYO • The world's oldest man, Mr Yasutaro Koide, died yesterday at the age of 112 in central Japan, a local official said.

The centenarian, born just months before the Wright brothers made their first successful flight, died of heart failure and pneumonia.

Mr Koide, a former tailor who was born on March 13, 1903 in Fukui prefecture, received a certificate from Guinness World Records confirming the achievement after another Japanese man, who was just a month older, died last July.
