PATTANI • Six people were gunned down by suspected militants in separate shootings in Thailand's southern provinces on Tuesday. The area's Malay-Muslim insurgency has claimed thousands of lives in the past 12 years, with the militants and Thailand's military both accused of rights abuses.

Duterte goes after casino kingpin

MANILA • Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the arrest of Mr Jack Lam, a Chinese citizen and one of Asia's top casino kingpins, on charges of economic sabotage and bribery. Philippine authorities have also shut down two properties owned by Mr Lam.

UN urges China to find missing lawyer

BEIJING • UN human rights experts have urged China to investigate the fate of prominent Chinese rights lawyer Jiang Tianyong, who has been missing since Nov 21 while en route to Beijing from Changsha to inquire after a detained human rights lawyer.
