Armed robbers break in to Swiss jail in broad daylight to steal cash

GENEVA (AFP) - Most criminals would give anything to get out of jail, but two armed robbers in Switzerland decided on Friday to turn that on its head, barging into a Geneva jail in broad daylight to steal cash.

The two black-clad men, one of them with a handgun, got into the Montfleury Remand Centre and made off with an undisclosed sum, said a Geneva police statement that did not provide further details.

The robbers escaped by motorbike across the nearby border with France, and the Swiss authorities immediately alerted their French counterparts.

The French police went in hot pursuit, but lost track of them, later finding the abandoned motorbike.

No one was injured during the raid on the jail, but the staff were left in shock, the Geneva police said.
