The United States' move to impose a 25 per cent tariff on steel imports and 10 per cent levy on aluminium riled producer countries and roiled stock markets as fears of a trade war loomed.

Key allies, including the European Union and Canada - the top exporters of steel and aluminium to the US - reacted angrily and vowed to retaliate, while major Asian producers led by China, South Korea and Japan urged the US to exercise restraint.
