TEGUCIGALPA (AFP) - At least 12 people are murdered every day in Honduras, figures showed Sunday, reinforcing the Central American country's grisly reputation as the most violent nation in the world.

More than 60,000 people died of homicide between 2000 and 2013 in Honduras, the national commission of human rights CONADEH said, the victims of attacks involving firearms, knives or blunt weapons.

The figures are about 10 times higher than the global average in terms of homicides per capita, CONADEH said, although theexplosion in violence has slowed in recent years.

Honduras has a population of eight million people.

President Juan Orlando Hernandez, in power since January, has promised to "restore peace and tranquillity".

Runaway crime in Honduras is blamed on drug traffickers and street gangs.
