Three days before the arrival of Pope Francis in Quito, thousands demonstrated for and against Mr Correa on Thursday. Mr Correa, who has been hounded by protests demanding his resignation since June 8 in rejection of his socialist politics, thanked his supporters at the end of a tense day during which he reported an attempted coup.
